Comment: I was at our 5th reunion, but haven't been to any of the others and am looking forward to this one! Since HS I've been on an extraodinary journey that led me to recovering from schizophrenia 30 years ago via a suppressed alternative treatment mode- see http:///iahf.com/on_the_back_wards.html This experience has been shaping, guiding and defining my life ever since. I am currently writing a book about my recovery that will be published as an ebook and sold via my website. This experience led to my creating International Advocates for Health Freedom, my consulting firm to the dietary supplement industry on legislative issues: www.nocodexgenocide.com and putting my personal story of recovery on the web enabled me to recently meet the woman of my dreams and we're now engaged. I've never been married, but am looking forward to it and we both want kids!  I live in Point Roberts WA, a border town not far from Vancouver BC Canada, and I enjoy organic gardening, sailing, and Masters swimming in spare time. I'm also loving all the outdoor things you can do here in the Pacific NW where the great outdoors constantly beckons! When I was at SHS, I was a troubled person suffering from biochemical imbalances that caused me lots of problems with depression and other debilitating symptoms, but I've been able to turn lemons into lemonade, and I credit SHS with helping me to have the strength to overcome my problems which later drove me from college. After recovering from schizophrenia, i became a boatbuilder and professional sailor for many years, then transitioned into my current work. I haven't been back in NJ since 2001 when my mom died, and it will be fun to attend this upcoming reunion and just to see good old Summit once again! Techie and I will be staying at the Turkey Hill Inn in Summit on Beachwood Ave while at the Reunion and it will be great to touch base with everyone! We're launching a business together that some of you might be interested in investing in. We're importing coconut sugar from the Philippines, its a super food with a glycemic index of only 35 (very low, good for diabetics!) (Cane sugar has a GI of 70 by comparison). We also have a line of baked goods made from coconut flour (good for anyone with gluten intolerance or celiac disease) , coconut sugar, organic blueberries and other fruits. We have a goal of developing a unique coconut beverage that we envision which will be better than any of the current ones on the market. Our manufacturer is in the Philippines, Techie's native country. She speaks fluent Tagalog and several other languages. Heres the number of the cellphone I'll have with me at the reunion: 480-309-3027

I have missed every reunion so far, but I look forward to seeing people after so long.

My story: When I finished Yale I embarked on an artist’s life on the outskirts of New York City.  This meant working part-time to support my art, living in lofts in Hoboken, Long Island City, and later Peekskill, NY; and then going on to grad school to become a teacher.  I also evolved into a sculptor, and have exhibited many indoor and outdoor sculptures and installations around the East Coast and beyond. I am always open to commissions, presentations, and collaborative projects and hope you will look up my website at: www.sarahhaviland.com.

Comment:

My parents moved to Summit when I was about 2 years old, so I grew up here and went to school at Lincoln, Summit Jr. High and Summit High.  I went to Cornell, majored in government and graduated in 1979.  I traveled a bit, then returned to Ithaca, and had some great experiences working with solar energy, food co-ops, organic farming and the start-up of a local credit union. Jobs were scarce, so I returned to Summit (thanks, Mom) and temped at Manhattan law firms.  I wanted a creative, problem-solving career, and returned to Cornell for a master’s degree in landscape architecture (1983-1986). Since then, I’ve worked on planning and design guidelines for waterfront public spaces in Hoboken, Jersey City and New York City.  I joined the NYC Department of City Planning in 1990 and met my husband Jim there. We married in 1993.  I missed our 1995 reunion because baby Rachel was due at the same time.  We now live in “Victorian Flatbush” Brooklyn with our two children, Rachel (almost 15) and Ethan (almost 13).
